Free For All Friday

Posted by AlienCG on April 17, 2009

Hello, my friends.  I realize that the economy is tough right now and we can all use a break in all areas of our lives.  Well, I can’t pay your rent or make your house payment (I have my own to worry about).  I can, however help you out with some of my favorite free software and other stuff online.  I used to this on the old site and will probably put it all together into a page at some point.  If you like this idea, let me know and maybe I’ll make it into a regular feature.

  1. Audacity (1.2.6 or 1.3.7Beta)–Audacity is a free open-source sound recorder with multi-layering, bit rate adjustments and plug-ins for various file types (including mp3, wav, avi, etc.).  I’ve played with this software to edit some songs that have the hidden track 15 minutes past the end of the song.  It doesn’t save in AAC format, but it will open those files with a free plug-in.
  2. Open Office (3.0.1)–Don’t want to drop the serious cash on MS Office?  Still need an office productivity suite to update your resume, manage your finances or create a slide show?  Open Office is the free solution to your problems?  It’s fully functional and operates very much like Office.  The only think missing is an e-mail program, but then there’s always Mozilla Thunderbird.
  3. Podcasts–If you have Apple iTunes and an account, the entire collection of free podcasts is all in one place.  Most of these are available in the universal mp3 format and searchable on the Internet.  (SIDE NOTE:  Apple does not host podcasts.  Thsi means the podcasts are available outside of iTunes.)  My favorite podcasts are from TWiT, which is hosted at TWiT TV.  Leo LaPorte, THE Tech Guy and chief TWiT hosts many shows throughout the week and they are all here.  I recommend Windows Weekly and The Tech Guy for useful information regarding your PC.

I am going to leave it there for this week.  If I’m pleased with your feedback, I will try to keep it going on Fridays until free stuff goes away.  And if you have a favorite freebie, let me know either here or by e-mailing me.  Have a good day and enjoy the free stuff.

Thanks for the freebies, Alien! I have Open Office at home and I really like it. I look at it and wonder why anyone buys MS Office.

Thanks for the free stuff info. We can all use free stuff right now.

  3. Thanks AlienCG! I’ve installed Open Office at work, just to see it, but since I have MS Office 2003 already, I haven’t really moved over, so to speak.

But, I’m rebuilding my laptop and am pretty sure I don’t have MS Office for it, nor do I want to pay for it. I’ll certainly us Open Office instead.
