It Was 30 Years Ago…uhhh…Last Year

Posted by AlienCG on June 19, 2009

I know, my Trivial Tuesday was about a year late, but it was still a fun little fact to look up.  Manuel guessed the first part correctly, May 3, 1978 was the date the first known “spam” e-mail was sent.  Contrary to popular belief, it was not advertising male enhancement pills or the pornographic web site (there were no photos or graphics on ARPAnet at the time).  This spam message was sent to most of the users of the ARPAnet on the West Coast and advertised the new DEC 2020 computer.  This message was not called “spam” since that term would not be used until March 31, 1993 to describe a USENET message.

I enjoy tech history, seeing where we came from technologically.  Next week, I will be looking at some of my favorite technology of the 1980’s since I’m celebrating the the decade.  I won’t spoil any of the surprises, but it should be fun to reminisce.  If you were born in the late 80’s or early 90’s, this will be an ancient history lesson.

The anniversary of what would come to be called spam. That is really funny…great trivia. And I am really excited for 80’s week. Those were some interesting times for me.

  3. That was fun and interesting. I’m looking forward to 80s week.

Other guesses at the first spam:

    1) “Hey all look what I invented!” – algore@ushouse.gov

    2) “New High Speed ProN Downloads – get one photo in a blistering 8 hours time!”

    3) Click to WIN FREE Commodore Vic-20

    4) Help. I am a prince in the Soviet Union. Send me $10,000 to help me get my riches out and I will give you millions”

    5) Online casino – The very best in ANSI character-based slot machines
